Leaf of the Day: Volume 3 - Taylor Beck

By Alex Hobson

After all of the excitement of Free Agent Frenzy and the Draft had blown over, the Leafs still had moves to make and had informed their fans that they were not done with their roster changes. They had finished most of their signings, but then President of Hockey Ops Brendan Shanahan announced that the Leafs had acquired forward Taylor Beck from the Nashville Predators in exchange for forward Jamie Devane.

Beck, who was an RFA on the Predators, recorded 8 goals and 8 assists for 16 points over 62 games. The Niagara Falls, Ontario native has proved that while his game is mainly focused on the defensive side and trying to be an energy player to get his team pumped up, he can contribute offensively at some times too. Since then, the Leafs have signed the 6'2, 205lb Beck to a one year, $875,000 deal, so while there is still a large chance that he is flipped at the deadline for draft picks, he is a low-risk, potentially-high reward player. Also given the fact that he's still relatively young at 24 years old, and that he's an RFA after his contract expires, there is still a chance the Leafs could re-sign him and keep him in the blue and white for a couple more years.

STATUS: RENTAL PLAYER

As stated earlier, Beck is on a one year contract and while he is an RFA, there is still a large chance that he's dealt at the deadline for draft picks. However, he is still young and could be kept after this year depending on how his season pans out.

2015-16 ROLE: BOTTOM SIX FORWARD

Again, only time will tell whether Beck will be a scratch on the Leafs or maintain a regular spot, but a bottom six role seems to fit him given his playing style. Beck played alongside of fellow Leafs Peter Holland and Richard Panik on the Guelph Storm of the OHL, so it's entirely likely that Beck stays on the team and plays alongside of his old teammates in 2015-16.
What do you think of the acquisition of Beck, Leafs fans? Weigh in below.
